The RCST is working hard in Scotland on a number of initiatives connected with the education of Scottish Service Children. This work is in addition to the grants that the Trust makes to individuals.

The core mission of the Education Programme is:
1. Promoting good practice on mitigating the effects of mobility on children of military service families.
2. Improving support for children and families of military service personnel (Tri-Service) prior to, during and post deployment to operational zones. Improving support for their teachers.
3. Developing coordinated action to meet the educational needs of Service Children in Scotland.
The Education Programme started as a project in 2005 and it has grown considerably since then. Initially it provided small grants for items of equipment to individual schools in Scotland with large numbers of Service Children. With the increase in operational deployment, especially in Afghanistan, and the continued effects of mobility the RCST is developing new ways in which it can support the education of Service Children.
In practical terms the Education Programme's (EP) activities has:
Worked with schools through the provision of support in areas such as: teaching support for Service Children, grants towards additional part-time teachers, provision of training and 'training of trainers', grants towards the creation of 'rooms to be', support over critical incident response plans. The Programme now focuses on specific longer term outcomes reaching out to wider groups of those involved and, where possible, will be using matched funding.
The EP has provided 'well-being' CPD training for teachers and support agencies.
The EP held its first conference for educational professionals, national and local government and armed forces in October 2009: with keynote from Professor Yule, an expert on effects of war on Service Children.
A second conference was held at Queen Victoria School (Dunblane) in November 2010 attracting 70 participants from the schools, local authorities, the military, Scottish Government and the Third Sector. Keynote speakers outlining research findings on mobility and learning: the Army's Firm Base initiative: the Curriculum for Excellence in relation to Service Children; there were breakout sessions on the sharing of best practice within schools in support of Service Children. A further conference is planned for Autumn 2012.
